Part 1.
At the time when all nissan sentra owners were switching over to the sr20ve engine I raced a really strong vvl gxi sabre with my modified 2.8 skyline.
At the time my 2.8 skyline was running a s280 regrind camshaft, mild headwork and triple weber dcoe 40mm sidedraft carburettors with 34mm chokes and a lightened flywheel, header and 57mm exhaust . The car pushed 160kw on the flywheel and 135kw on the rear wheels.
The vvl had a dicktator std management, header, short ram induction and 63mm exhaust. Car was pushing +-150kw and 230NM on the flywheel.
Run1 we go rolling in 1st gear. ...vvl opens 1 car. ...2nd gear vvl opens 2 more cars. ..by the end of 4th gear I am about 6 cars behind.
Run2 rolling in 1st gear. ...He let's me go... I open about 3 cars before he starts chasing me...by early 4th he catches me and parks in my boot at 180km/h. We call it a night with me very disappointed in the 2.8 as can be expected.
Part 2 (rerun).
So after getting my ass handed to me by the vvl I have some more mods done to the skyline and try my luck again.
I upgrade the carburettors to a set of triple dcoe 45mm webers with 36mm chokes. Replace the 3.9 ratio diff with a 4.11 ratio one. Button clutch is installed and exhaust is upgraded to 63mm. The cylinder head is skimmed to bump the compression. The whole setup is retuned and the car pushes 182kw on the flywheel and 152kw on the rear wheels on the same dyno machine as before.
The only mods done to the vvl since our last run was him upgrading his gbox to a primera short ratio version.
Run1 rolling in 1st gear and we go. ..1st gear to end of 2nd he edges me and I drop to his back door. 3rd to 4th the gap stays constant with me sitting at his back door when we tap end of 4th.
Run2 we make a uTurn and stage at the robot. Light hits green and we go. Vvl takes the launch opens up a few inches between my front and his rear bumper. ...End of 2nd and this gap grows to about a fender. ...3rd to the end of 4th I start creeping closer and close the fender gap and we tap for the red robot with my front bumper literally inline with his rear bumper.
So a big improvement since the last run but the vvl still has the edge. You have to do lots of mods to these older engines to keep up with today's technologically advanced engines. Big up to the vvl...It runs very well for an unopened engine with only bolt ons.
